How to Keep Berries Fresh Longer
Fresh strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries are wonderful—until you open the refrigerator and discover they've already started turning soft or moldy.
The good news? A few simple storage habits can help your berries stay fresh longer.
The Berry-Saving Trick
1. Sort them first.
Remove any berries showing mold or significant damage. One spoiled berry can quickly become a problem for the others.
2. Keep them dry.
For most berries, it's best to wait until you're ready to eat them before washing. Excess moisture during storage can encourage spoilage.
3. Give them a little breathing room.
Store berries in a clean, ventilated container rather than packing them tightly into an airtight jar. A paper towel can help absorb excess moisture.
4. Refrigerate promptly.
Keep berries chilled, ideally at 40°F (4°C) or below. Raspberries and blackberries are particularly delicate, so enjoy those sooner.
5. Wash just before enjoying.
Rinse berries gently under cool running water. There's no need for soap or special produce-cleaning solutions.
What About the Vinegar Bath Trick?
You may have seen recommendations to soak berries in diluted vinegar before storing them.
While vinegar can affect some microorganisms, there isn't strong enough evidence that a homemade vinegar bath consistently extends the storage life of every type of berry. It also introduces moisture that must be thoroughly removed.
For a simple, reliable routine, sorting, keeping berries dry, refrigerating, and washing just before eating are excellent places to start.
A little less moisture. A little more airflow. And a lot fewer berries going to waste.
